The 5th "Academy Awards of Musical" Award Ceremony Concluded Successfully

On the evening of October 6, 2020, the Fifth "Academy Awards of Musical" Award Ceremony was successfully held at the Beijing Shijingshan District Cultural Center. After a series of activities, such as rigorous and meticulous online evaluation and screening, offline re-evaluation and final evaluation of a hundred flowers blooming, full and wonderful public service lecture hall, the Award successfully ended.

In this Award, the domestic and foreign famous universities,first-class scholars and artists in this professional field formed a review committee who strictly evaluated the participant works. Award-winning results went through professional evaluation and rigorous assessment, and the contestant works underwent layer by layer the initial evaluation, re-evaluation and final selection. According to statistics, a total of nearly 200 works from nearly 50 comprehensive colleges and universities, professional colleges and other art units participated in the fifth "Academy Awards of Musical". Among them,33 individual contestants and 15 teams passed strict initial evaluation. A total of 48 works participated in the review.

In the course of the Awards, the Organizing Committee also prepared Public Service Lecture Hall for the contestants gathering from all directions. From October 4 to the evening of October 5, Ms. Chen Wei, famous director and head of the acting teaching and research department of Chinese Conservatory of Music, Mr. He Yan, famous performing artist and director of the performing department of Shanghai Academy of Drama, Ms. Li Hai’ou, famous singer and director of the Conservatory of Music of Shandong Normal University, Mr. Lin Zaiyong, well-known playwright, and other famous scholars and industry leaders in the musical field were invited to give special lectures in the hope of providing more academic resources and broader academic horizons for the young professionals who attended the Awards.

 

Providing a stage for talent display and a platform for the professional communication, and constructing fresh public service classrooms for musical study and appreciation is the initial heart of the Awards. In the Fifth "Academy Awards of Musical", the high quality even over previous years has been presented, which also responds to the practical significance of the public service classrooms: cultivating musical talents with aesthetic education and creating Chinese musicals with the characteristics of the times.

 

At the awarding ceremony, the jury announced the Awards results. The Organizing Committee has set up "Best Team Performance", "Best Musical Actor", "Excellent Team Performance", "Most Elegant Musical Actor", "Yuanpei Musical Scholarship", etc. "Best Musical Actress" is vacant and its bonus has been allocated to "Most Elegant Musical Actor", "Yuanpei Musical Scholarship", "Most Popular Musical Performer" and "Most Popular Musical Team Performance" to better encourage young students.

The "Best Team Performance" was won by the "Battle of Xiang River" Team of Guangxi Performing Arts Group. Mr. Peng Feng, Dean of School of Arts, Peking University, and Mr. Yu Junjian, President of College of Chinese and ASEAN Arts, presented awards to the award-winning team. For the professional requirements of musical actors, Pr. Yu Junjian, in the award speech, put forward his expectations, "Musical actors should be the best singer, and also the best performer and dancer." Peng Feng's speech was full of humors, which claimed that he was "the best film producer among the curators and the best singer among the researchers" teacher, which will certainly play a positive role in cultivating a complex, interdisciplinary outstanding musical talents. Once again, it emphasizes the important characteristics of musical which is the collection of various artistic forms.

In addition, after a week of online voting from September 30 to October 6,   the Musical Academy Awards also produced one the Most Popular Musical   Performer and one the Most Popular Musical Performance Team.

The winner of the “Most Popular Musical Performer” award is Gao Qi. Contestant Gao Qi won 44987 votes in a week-long online voting session.

 

 “Most Popular Team Performance ”

"Most Popular Musical Team Performance" award winners are Wang Junqiang from Wuhan Conservatory of Music and Zhu Kaixi team. They received a total of 12699 votes in the voting session.

 

For the purpose of ensuring the integrity and breadth of participation, the 5th Awards has opened the "online and offline" evaluation channel, connecting three senior judges from overseas in the form of 5G live: Mr. Copeland Woodruff, renowned musical director, Professor at Lawrence University, Honorary member of the American Guild of Musical Artists, Mr. Park Renxian, well-known Korean director and director of the Department of Musical Theatre of East-West University of Korea, Mr. Richard Louis, famous conductor, composer and lifelong visiting lecturer of the Department of Musical Theatre of the Royal Scottish Conservatory of Music.

Ms. Zhou Yingchen, Director of Research Centre for Ethnic Music and Musical Theatre, Peking University, Convenor of the Awards Experts, thanked the judges and contestants of the Fifth Academy Awards of Musical at the awarding ceremony. “From 70% of the contributions to the first Awards being foreign works to 70% of the finalists of today's Fifth Awards being original Chinese works, the change is gratifying. The pureness of art is the primary standard of this prize. The identity of the producers, the size of the production and the digits of the tickets selling are not considered in the selection process, to ensure its fairness and purity to the greatest extent."

 

 

Many contestants were also grateful and happy for the success of the Awards. "We saw so many excellent plays on this stage and felt motivated to continue our efforts. The judges are very kind, treating us like children, very meticulous to us to find our own problems. We really felt like we had gained a lot this time."

 

In this Awards activity, Star Musical Academy of Nanjing University of the Arts as a sponsor gave strong support. Mr. Zhou Jianming, famous music educator and Dean of Star Musical Academy of Nanjing University of the Arts, said, "I am very happy to see you perform wonderfully on stage these two days. Thank the Research Centre for Ethnic Music and Musical Theatre for providing all the students with such a wonderful stage, so that we can show our learning achievements and accomplishment on this stage. This year is the fifth Awards, and we have seen the first four stand-out contestants show themselves actively on our stage in China and even the world. This confirms the significance of the activity and the phenomenon it presents. This phenomenon is unique in our current cultural context. In fact, this is constantly advancing the pace of our national musical talent training, so that we continue to close the world's high-level musicals."

 

Ms. Chen Wei, famous director and Director of the Performance Teaching and Research Department of the Chinese Conservatory of Music, affirmed and encouraged all the contestants after re-evaluation. "In this special year of 2020, the event is a great inspiration to contestants, judges and the entire musical industry. In this year's event, I saw more Chinese original works than in previous years, which moved me very much. I sincerely hope that this activity can plant the seeds of lifelong struggle for Chinese musicals in the heart of every contestant. We should pay attention to the development of Chinese original musicals and stay in this soil, which will help us find our audience, our aesthetic value and our roots," she said.
